Pollen combing

چکیده
The stingless bee Trigona carbonaria is a small, shiny black bee native to Australia. These bees collect pollen and nectar in much the same way as the well-known honey bee Apis mellifera, but can be more effective at pollination because as well as crawling over the anthers, they crawl over the style of the flower, delivering pollen to the stigma. The main scanning electron micrograph above shows the basitarsal comb on the front leg of T. carbonaria. The curved comb has a row of 'teeth' made from cuticle and not only looks similar to the sort of comb that we might use for our hair, but also has a similar function, being used to comb pollen from the multitude of hairs that cover the bee. (The image at top right shows pollen grains caught among the hairs on the thorax of another stingless bee, Austroplebeia australis.) Pollen is then gathered into a pollen basket (or corbicula), a relatively hairless region surrounded by a fringe of hairs on each hind leg. The image at bottom left shows a pollen basket empty of all but two pollen grains.

Analysis of Replicating Yeast Chromosomes by DNA Combing.
Molecular combing of DNA fibers is a powerful technique to monitor origin usage and DNA replication fork progression in the budding yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae. In contrast to traditional flow cytometry, microarray, or sequencing techniques, which provide population-level data, DNA combing provides DNA replication profiles of individual molecules. DNA combing uses yeast strains that express ...
متن کاملCombing Euclidean buildings
For an arbitrary Euclidean building we define a certain combing, which satisfies the “fellow traveller property” and admits a recursive definition. Using this combing we prove that any group acting freely, cocompactly and by order preserving automorphisms on a Euclidean building of one of the types An, Bn, Cn admits a biautomatic structure. متن کاملTame Combing and Almost Convexity Conditions
We explore relationships between the family of successively weaker almost convexity conditions, and successively weaker tame combing conditions. We show that both Thompson’s group F and the Baumslag-Solitar groups BS(1, p) with p ≥ 3 admit a tame combing with a linear radial tameness function. By earlier work of Belk and Bux showing that F is not minimally almost convex, and of Elder and Hermil...
متن کاملWised Semi-Supervised Cluster Ensemble Selection: A New Framework for Selecting and Combing Multiple Partitions Based on Prior knowledge
The Wisdom of Crowds, an innovative theory described in social science, claims that the aggregate decisions made by a group will often be better than those of its individual members if the four fundamental criteria of this theory are satisfied. This theory used for in clustering problems. Previous researches showed that this theory can significantly increase the stability and performance of...
متن کاملThe Dehn Function of Psl
We show that PSL2(Z[ 1 p ]) admits a combing with bounded asynchronous width, and use this combing to show that PSL2(Z[ 1 p ]) has an exponential Dehn function. As a corollary, PSL2(Z[ 1 p ]) has solvable word problem and is not an automatic group.
